About ENERGY STAR® Program for Homes

ENERGY STAR® certified homes meet a set of strict energy efficiency requirements for new residential construction, as set by the EPA. Homes and apartments with ENERGY STAR® certification are at least 10% more efficient than homes built to code and achieve a 20% improvement on average. TopBuild Home Services is a leading ENERGY STAR® partner who can advise and support builders in understanding ENERGY STAR® program requirements and going through the process to obtain certification.

Beginning in 2023, ENERGY STAR certification will be required to meet the 45L Tax Credit Program. Our energy professionals can help builders determine qualification, provide guidance on cost-effective alternatives and perform testing and inspection of residential building projects to meet program requirements.

What is the ENERGY STAR® for Homes Program?

ENERGY STAR® for Homes program is an above code program run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that promotes energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and home comfort. These homes include a complete thermal enclosure system, high-efficiency heating, ventilation and cooling systems, and energy efficient lighting and appliances. Only providers educated in and certified by the ENERGY STAR® program, like TopBuild Home Services can certify a new home as an ENERGY STAR® home.

Who certifies ENERGY STAR® homes?

ENERGY STAR® certified homes are evaluated, inspected, and labeled by third-party energy advisors like TopBuild Home Services who are certified by a Home Certification Organization (HCO) through the EPA. Certified homes are constructed by dedicated home builders who build to a higher energy-saving standard and are ENERGY STAR partners.

Can existing homes be ENERGY STAR® for Homes Certified?

No, they cannot. ENERGY STAR® for Homes is a residential program focused on new construction. To be considered for certification, all ENERGY STAR® homes must be inspected at the pre-drywall phase as well as receive performance testing like blower door and duct blaster testing at the final inspection stages. TBHS has years of experience working within the program requirements and can help builders to navigate the process from the beginning.
